Disabled access
Access to the British High Commission
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and this High Commission are keen to ensure that their buildings and services are fully accessible to disabled members of the public. Wherever possible, we have made our buildings and services accessible. Sometimes however, this is not possible due to security or other restrictions. In these situations we will endeavour to provide a service or access to a building in an alternative way to ensure equality of access for disabled people. To assist disabled visitors, we have set out below details of disabled access at this High Commission. We hope this information is helpful.
General physical access
Entrances: The main entrance at the front of building is clear and unobstructed but parking restrictions apply. A mobile wheelchair ramp is available on request. The rear entrance of the building should not be used except in emergencies. There is only one lift and this is situated inside the main entrance of the building and is available to all floors. It will accommodate wheelchair users or those with limited physical mobility. Toilets for visitors are situated on the 2nd floor. However, the cubicles are not designed for use by disabled people. They are very small and will not easily accommodate a wheelchair inside. Wheelchair users or those with limited physical mobility will therefore require some help to use these toilets. Parking facilities for wheel chair users are only available at the front of the building and there is full transfer space. However, as mentioned above parking restrictions apply. For visitors who prefer to use the stairs, fixed handrails are present and are easy to grip. Doors on all floors of the building and to the High Commission are also easily accessible to visitors and the offices are generally well lit. All floor coverings are safe and even. In the event of an emergency the janitor and High Commission officials will provide every assistance necessary to evacuate disabled visitors who are visiting the High Commission at the time.
Access for visually-impaired visitors
All signs in the building and the High Commission offices are clear. If you have difficulty please let us know. Internationally recognisable symbols are used where necessary. Braille is not readily available except on the floor indicators in the lift. Guide dogs are welcome.
Access for deaf/hard of hearing visitors
Hearing loops, minicom and textphones are not available. Hearing dogs are welcome.
